The Fashion Spectrum

So I'm sat in my room, at my desk, sipping on my breakfast smoothie, having just returned from a lecture. Now, even though this lecture started far to early, I found it really quite interesting. The Fashion Spectrum; colour within fashion, and how, why, when, where it is used.

The first thing we were told to look at is the repetition of colour palettes in different stores and websites. This is a colour trend, and a lot of brands and designers follow what colour trend is in that season. Above is the London Autumn/Winter colour palette for 2017, and looking at a variety of brand's "New In", you will find a variety of uses for these colours in their collections, in preparation for the season coming. I find it so interesting how we have a collection of colours we circulate round for each season, and often similar colours repeat; in spring/summer you'll see brighter colours, yellow, pink, blue, green. If you notice this, you will notice that the colours we wear in each season are often the colours we associate and see within those seasons.

We also looked at how the use of colours has changed through the decades and what it has meant.

In the 1950's all the colours used were bright and bold, this is because it communicated optimism in a post-war society; it represented the kind of direction we wanted to move in, a positive, lively, forward thinking direction.

The 1960's was black and white with the fascination of primary colours. All the shapes were clean and graphic. This was due to the shapes being created with in fashion, and how the shapes created with the colours complimented the clothes. A lot of the sharp angles in fashion you wouldn't have noticed if it was coloured with simple pastels. The colours and shapes used were also associated with technology and industry.

The 1970's welcomed more earthy tones, in relation to the global and spiritual awareness of the time. It was a time when authority was being questioned and there was a more complex way of thinking. The colours connect with the earth and peace; it was a very politically and all round dynamic decade.

Colour is used for loads of different reasons, and how, when, where it is used is important.

I am sure I am to learn a lot more in these next few days, and I will be sure to share my learnings on here, whether it is from lectures or my own research. Honestly, I am finding this all very interesting.

Ta Ta for now, My lovelies.

Miss Blue
